GLB, glTF, OBJ, STL, FBX, PLY, 3MF, DAE, USDZ, ZIP · up to 250 MB · or drop it here
Pick an OBJ with its MTL and textures, or a glTF with its .bin, in one go. A ZIP that holds them works too.
Or try a model made on this site
Drop a 3D model to convert it. The file stays in this tab; nothing is uploaded.
FBX to STL converter
The FBX to STL converter reads a binary or ASCII FBX in your browser and writes one binary STL for a slicer. The unit the FBX declares becomes millimetres, the model is turned Z-up, and a print height of 28, 50, 100 or 180 mm can be set; textures, materials and animation are left behind.
FBX to STL in numbers
The unit the FBX declares is read and written as millimetres, the unit slicers assume for STL.
The sample chest is 75.81 cm in its FBX, so kept at its true size it is taller than most print beds; a print height fixes that.
An STL is one still shape: clips and bones are dropped and the mesh is written in its rest pose.
The largest FBX the page opens; it is read inside the browser tab and 0 bytes are uploaded.
Two FBX files through the FBX to STL converter
Read back from the downloaded STLs at Original size.
The chest: 2.6 MB of FBX, 1.3 MB of STL
26,942 triangles became a 1,347,184-byte binary STL, 832.23 × 519.30 × 758.07 mm, with its 75.81 cm height now on the Z axis.
A dancing character in a T-pose
A rigged character with 2 animation clips came out as 55,320 triangles in its rest pose, 1,946.85 mm wide with the arms out, not in any frame of its dance.
Everything else stayed behind
For both files the carry-over list reported the UV layout, the normals, the materials and the textures as not written.
What carries over
What survives FBX to STL
Only the shape reaches the slicer.
| What | What happens |
|---|---|
| Every mesh's trianglesKept | All meshes in the FBX are written into one STL as triangles; quads and larger polygons are split first. |
| Materials, textures and UVsDropped | An STL stores no surface, so colors, image maps and the UV layout are not written. |
| Smooth vertex normalsDropped | An STL keeps one normal per triangle, worked out from its corners, so the FBX's smoothing normals are not written. |
| Animation and skeletonDropped | Clips, bones and skin weights are left out, and a character is printed in the pose its bones were bound in. |
| Unit and up axisChanged | The FBX unit becomes millimetres and the Y-up model is turned Z-up, so it stands on the bed instead of lying on its back. |
What an FBX model needs before it prints
FBX files are built for engines and animation, so a few things decide whether the STL slices cleanly.
A size in millimetres
FBX files are usually in centimetres at real-world scale, so a character arrives a metre or more tall; choose a print height on the page.
A pose that stands
A rigged character exports in its bind pose. Arms held straight out print as long overhangs that need supports.
Surfaces with thickness
Game meshes often use single planes for hair, cloth or leaves, which have no volume to print and may leave the model open.
Convert an FBX to STL in three actions
The page opens with STL picked; the print height is the only choice left.
Drop the FBX
Pick the .fbx. The page reads its unit and shows the triangle count and the size it would print at.
Pick a print height
Choose 28, 50, 100 or 180 mm, or keep Original size when the FBX is already modeled at print scale.
Convert to STL
The binary .stl saves to your device with the height in its file name, ready for the slicer.
Limits of FBX to STL conversion
The STL is exactly the shape the FBX held, flaws included.
Not checked for watertightness
Holes, flipped faces and open edges are copied as they are; run STL repair before slicing when the model was made for a screen.
The bind pose only
No frame of an animation can be picked. Pose the character in the source program and export that mesh to print it posed.
One merged file
Every mesh lands in a single STL; cut it into parts afterwards when pieces must print separately.
No color in the print file
For a multicolor print, open the textured FBX in the texture to vertex color tool, which writes a 3MF with filament colors.
